Tomasz Wiciejewski, a forest ranger from Werechanie, born in 1908, from his earliest years witnessed and participated in the events of World Wars I and II. An important figure in his life was his older brother, Jan, a participant in the Battle of Warsaw in 1920, a police officer during the occupation, and a lieutenant of the Home Army, murdered in Zamość Rotunda. The author of the text, on the basis of his father’s accounts of the past (the actual memoirs were burnt for fear of being dangerous to the family), describes the civilians’ life in the close vicinity of the front line, their cooperation with the fighting Polish army (both official and underground), their contacts with the occupants, and their persecution, which often resulted in their deaths. The story is mainly set in the Maziarnia forest house in Werechanie, which, thanks to its location, was a safe place for meetings of military commanders (e.g. during the battles near Tomaszów Lubelski in September 1939). At the same time, it was often exposed to Polish-German and Russian-German fighting in the area, the consequences of which were painfully felt by the families living there.
