Discovery of a Clay Pipe of Wachmistrz Józef Troszczyński (1787-1836) in a Tenement House at 20 Zamenhofa in Zamość

Abstract

In 2016, during the renovation of an Old Town tenement in Zamość, the head of a ceramic compound pipe (so-called lulka) was accidentally found in its cellars. The relic ended up in the collection of the Zamość Museum. The surface of the richly decorated pipe bears the following inscriptions: “Iosef Troszczynski,”, “Kunstler,”, “1823,” and “7.” The discovery site, located within Zamość Fortress, in the vicinity of the 19th-century barracks, suggested a connection between the find and a soldier named Troszczyński. Bibliographical and genealogical research has shown that the owner of the pipe was Józef Troszczyński (1787-1836), a wachmistrz1 of the 1st Uhlan Regiment of the Duchy of Warsaw, a participant in the
Napoleonic campaign of 1814 in France, an awardee of the Cross of the Legion of Honour and the Order of Virtuti Militari, a lieutenant of the 5th Zamość Uhlan Regiment in the November Rising of 1830-31, and a pardoned exile, who rests it the Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw.
