Materials on the History of Printing in Janów Lubelski in the 19th century.

Urszula Kurzątkowska

Abstract

The article discusses the activity of the first printing house in Janów Lubelski (1862-1889). As emphasised by the author, the topic is little known, is not mentioned in publications devoted to the history of the town, and is only signalled in studies on the history of printing in the Kingdom of Poland. The article is based on such source materials as the files of the Commission of the Lublin Voivodship and the Lublin Governor’s Office from the State Archive in Lublin. The printing house in Janów Lubelski was established by Antoni Kurzątkowski, a typesetter and printer, after receiving permission from the Government Commission for Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment. The author presents Kurzątkowski’s life and career (he later ran a printing house in Radom), also listing the members of his family. In addition, she discusses the rather exacting conditions that those involved in typesetting, defined as a highly specialised craft, had to meet. The author has  established that Kurzątkowski was primarily involved in printing poviat circulars and, among other things, forms for civil and military authorities. He he did not serve the civilian population. At that time there was one more printing house in the Zamość district, located in Józefów Ordynacki and owned by Shai Waks. The Janów poviat was established only in 1867, along with the so-called lithography, which belonged to the local authorities and operated for about 30 years. In 1875, Kurzątkowski handed over his printing house to his apprentice Tomasz Woszczynski, who expanded his business and also printed placards for  entertainment events.
