Finding an efficient way to build a lasting competitive edge is one of the most demanding tasks that entrepreneurs face these days. This study makes an attempt at finding an answer to the question whether research and development activities and focus on innovation implementation may offer quantifiable results for companies on the way to acquire a competitive market position. A thesis was put forward that R&D&I activities allow for effective construction of competitive edge of companies and attempts were made proving it. An analysis and evaluation of external determinants was made (the so-called climate for implementation — current situation determined on the basis of characteristics of statistical data in the area of research and development activities in Poland, selected available tools in the form of EU subsidies for innovations and R&D&I activities) and analysis of a case based on a case study of a selected company. The recapitulation includes remarks made after the performance of the analyses in question.
