Udział Stolicy Apostolskiej w pokonaniu faszyzmu

Józef Dębiński

Abstrakt

Fascism in his assumption was strongly opposed to Christianity. Hitler claimed that fascism is irreconcilable with Christianity. In his opinion, someone could be Christian or German. You cannot be both. Pope Pius XII from the beginning of his pontificate was trying to prevent a war, which horror he sensed. Vatican diplomacy did everything possible to prevent war from occurring. Although the pope did not condemn outright the Nazism of the Third Reich and the crime of genocide, it was commonly known, who in his statements, he regarded as responsible for barbarism happening at those times. In view of such anti-Nazism attitude of Pius XII, Hitler spoke openly of entering the Vatican and arresting the pope. All well-known and astute historians and significant diplomats those times had no doubt that Pius XII was a zealous opponent of war crimes. There is no doubt that the Holy See has played an important role in the Second World War. Geographical location and historical, diplomatic and social significance of Vatican caused that the city was not only in the center of events, as a passive observer but also an active participant who created the image of the world’s largest conflict. The Holy See tried to fight the Nazism also with the help of financial background, including the donation of large sums of money to the American war industry, which has led to defeat of the Nazism and put an end to brutal murders. Apart from financing activities even more important role the Holy See has fulfilled since 1939 through charitable activities. Jews was under a special care of Vatican. During the Second World War, the Pope was not accused of any pro-German policy or pro-fascist sympathies, it was only in the 60s twentieth century, when he became the hero of the black legend. Currently he is a candidate for sainthood.
