In Search of “Invaluable Knowledge”: The Journeys of the Kromer Family from the 16th- Century Biecz

Abstract

The Kromer family, originating from the 16th-century Biecz, embarked upon their educational journey in the local parish school. Subsequently, they ventured beyond the confines of their town, thereby expanding their intellectual horizons. The present article delineates four distinct trajectories pursued by the Kromer family of Biecz, elucidating their acquisition of “invaluable knowledge”. Marcin, the eldest of the brothers, took up studies at the Academy of Cracow and continued his university education in Italy. His younger brother Andrzej was a promising humanist but he died during his studies in Cracow. Mikołaj, who was the Kromers’ youngest son, followed in Marcin’s footsteps, extending his education in institutions in Germany. Conversely, the Kromers’ nephew, Jan Złotnik, did not go to university and was educated at the court of Stanislaus Hosius, the Bishop of Warmia.
