The turn of the century was a time of awakening the national consciousness of the peoples of East-Central Europe. The issue of national self-determination touched Jewish nation too. Significant number of Jews joined their nationalism to the concept of establishment of Zionist ideology. The father of the Jewish national thought and modern Zionism was Theodor Herzl and – partially – Vladimir Jabotinsky, creator of Betar, followed Hertz and his main idea. Brit Trumpeldor was youth organisation established in 1923 in Riga. Betar interest among Jewish youth was so big, that compound structure worked all over Europe and in Palestine. Betar sought to establish a hierarchical Jewish state on the land of Palestine; being a national-radical organization, the movement drew patterns , both – in ideology and external symbols with other nationalist movements of the interwar period. Members of Betar wore sand shirts, buttons with menorah and they greeted the Roman salute, for which the Jewish Left and communists attacked members of the organization calling them “Hitler’s Jew” and “fascists”.
