„Izbica, Izbica – the Jewish capital”. The history and today’s memory of a shtetl

Abstract
The paper presents the history of Izbica from an angle of its Jewish past. Attention was paid to the origination of the town, as the place to live for Jews expelled from the nearby Christian Tarnogóra. Author tried to show the development of the town until World War II, taking into consideration role of the local Jews. A special attention is paid to tragic role of Izbica during the Holocaust. For the Jewish inhabitants, and Jews from other Polish regions, especially the so-called “Transit ghetto” for Jews from the countries of Central and Western Europe. With regard to the present, author evaluated the condition of local Judaica paying special attention to the history and role of the local cemetery, as well as historical kuczka (traditonal Jewish tent for Sukkot). The memories of two survivors of the Holocaust are treated as cultural relics as well as their memories of meeting with the local population. With regret, it was found that the important places for the history of local Jews, today are significant monuments funded by individuals and institutions outside the town. In the ceremony dedicated to the memory of Izbica Jews, participated mainly local youth. Indifferent relationship of the adult community of the town, to the Jewish history was recorded. At the same time locals not seized the possibility of establishing international cooperation with the Jews in the name of the Jewish history of the town. Even prize and diploma of the German Embassy in Warsaw, awarded to the mayor for trying to change the attitude of the local population towards the Jews, and the appreciation of their contribution to the history of the town, not inclined to such activities.
