Historical and Political Determinants of the Contemporary Identity of Finnish Jews

Abstract

The article attempts to analyze the historical and political determinants of the identity of Jews living in Finland. In the first part of the text, the author analyzes the influence of the policies of Sweden and Russia on the situation of Jews in Finland and on Jewish identity in the interwar period. In the next part, he discusses the situation of the Jews during World War II. Finnish Jews fought together with Germany against their common enemy — the Soviet Union. The author also attempts to analyze the contemporary identity of Jews in Finland as part of its increasingly secularized society and the attitude of Finland and its inhabitants to the state of Israel. Special attention is paid to the moral dilemmas of the followers of Judaism who fought on the side of Germany during World War II, bearing in mind the fact that they knew about the Holocaust.
