The Help Given to Jews during the Nazi Occupation of Tomaszów Mazowiecki

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the help given to Jews during the Nazi occupation of Tomaszów Mazowiecki. It refers to people mentioned in post-war accounts, archival materials and court documents who provided food, medical and armed assistance to Jews. Tomaszów was incorporated into the Radom District and the newly established Tomaszów Kreis of the General Government, and the town’s ghetto functioned in the years 1940–1942. Despite the Nazi occupation and establishment of the ghetto, the neighbourly relations between the Poles and the Jews were not disrupted. The aim of the article is to study the continuity of those relations and to describe all acts of support offered to the Jews. Hence, special attention is paid both to the Jews who received help as well as the Poles and the Germans who provided it. The analysis goes far beyond individuals honored with the title of Righteous Among the Nations.
