The Jewish Community in Zamość in the interwar period

Adam Kopciowski

Abstract

The article describes functioning of the Jewish Community in Zamość in the period of interwar time [1918-1939]. Some basic information was included in its introduction, concerning the history of the Jewish Community of Zamość since 1588 as well as its legal background, the territorial and demographic scope in the above mentioned period. The main part of the study reveals the most important issues connected with the title’s subject: the political shape of the community’s authorities, the conflicts connected with the rabbi’s election, the financial policy as well as the community’s clerks’ characteristics. The synagogues and the houses of prayer, ritual baths, cemeteries, the Torah’s Talmud, the “Ajc Chaim” Yeshivah as well as charity brotherhoods (including the old people’s house, orphanage and the Jewish Rescue Comittee) are described in the last part of the article as the institutions subordinate to the Jewish Zamość Community.
