The Jewish community of Maków Mazowiecki and its vicinity. Memory of history witnesses vs. commemoration

Abstract
The extermination of the Jewish community living in northern Mazovia has been the subject of scholarly reflection many times, which is reflected mostly in historical studies. Despite this fact, there is still a need for a deeper reflection on such phenomena as: lasting memory of history witnesses or social and collective memory in the context of public discourses, but also commemorating the knowledge of the Holocaust. In this paper, I direct particular attention to events related to the time of WWII; however, it is equally important to explore the varied opinions on social relations before 1939. In this context, I highlight what is remembered by seniors and partly commemorated in public spaces. The ethnohistorical sources used in this thesis were collected, among others, as a result of the project entitled „Upamiętniając wiedzę przodków…” (Commemorating ancestral knowledge...) and in the course of ethnographic research work conducted in northern Mazovia between 2016 and 2020.
