Mourning after the death of Józef Piłsudski in the light of the “Moment”

Abstract

The article shows the reaction and attitude editorial Lviv’s „Moment” about Józef Piłsudski’s death. Marshal throughout the period of his reign took the defence of the Jewish minority in Poland, bestowing it with the undisguised affection and esteem. Equally positive attitude towards Piłsudski has got Jewish communities in Poland, especially Zionists for which the Supreme Commander was a symbol of the victorious struggle for independence of Poland. After his death, Zionists began to ask fundamental questions about the shape of the Republic and the future of the Jews in the country. Based on the analysis of the source has been established, that his death was received with complete surprise and shock. Mourning the Piłsudski was sincere as evidenced by the widely reported in the daily, until its completion. In the first text editors of the newspaper fell into total pessimism, predicting Poland’s apathy and lack of prospects for development without Piłsudski. The next days after his death tamed editors “Moment” with the situation, urging journalists to timid attempts already looking to the future without him.
