Menschenschreck: The Fate of the Jews in Międzyrzec Podlaski during World War II

Abstract

The article discusses the fate of Jews in Międzyrzec Podlaski during World War II. The first part discusses the situation of the Jewish population before the outbreak of war. The existing divisions within the Jewish community concerning its material status and political opinions, as well as its inflamed relations with the Christians, had a great impact on the development of the situation after the outbreak of war. The second part discusses the period of Soviet occupation and the entry of German troops, to be followed by a description of the living conditions in the local ghetto. The complexity of life in the ghetto and the social differences between its inhabitants (the rich versus the poor, the members of the Judenrat and the Jewish police versus the ordinary residents of the closed-off district) are presented in detail. The work includes descriptions of the reactions of the Jews to the various ghetto liquidation actions, ranging from apathy to denial of reality to taking action to save their lives and those of their loved ones. The final chapters of the book deal with survival strategies, Polish-Jewish relations, and attempts to rebuild Jewish life in postwar Międzyrzec.
