Jews about Gypsies in interwar Poland. The Roma issues in „Nowy Dziennik” (1918-1939)

Alicja Gontarek

Abstract

The article presents the problem of Gypsy-Jewish relations in the Second Polish Republic. It is of a contributory nature – it focuses on one press title ("Nowy Dziennik"), which is the oldest Zionist periodical in Poland, published in Polish language since 1918. The analysis of its content allowed several conclusions to be drawn. Direct relations between the two minorities – Gypsies and Jews – were almost non-existent, and the Jewish side, if it occasionally wrote about Gypsy community, saw only the negative consequences of such contacts. As far as the perception of the Gypsies by the Zionist elite was concerned, the Zionist elite upheld all the negative stereotypes and myths about them that were characteristic of the majority society. It was also silent about the stateforming aspirations of the Gypsies.
