“The Return of the Beggar King”. Józef Piłsudski’s Journey from Magdeburg to the Belvedere

Abstract

The article presents a brief section of Józef Piłsudski’s biography: his life from the time he was released from prison in the Magdeburg fortress (November 8, 1918) to his move to the Belvedere Palace in Warsaw (November 29, 1918). During those three weeks, Piłsudski turned from a prisoner into the head of state that was reborn after the partitions of Poland. It was undoubtedly a breakthrough period in his life, but also a breakthrough period in the history of Poland. In November 1918, Piłsudski was the most important builder of that new state: politically, militarily, and economically. The most difficult tasks then included the formation of a central government to which various centers of power existing in Poland would be subordinated, the creation of the military foundations, and finally the taking of steps toward holding free and universal elections to the constituent assembly. All of this was happening at a time when
revolutionary slogans were reaching Polish territory from both Russia and Germany, which was dangerous for a very young and weak state such as contemporary Poland.
