THE GLOBAL FOOD CRISIS AND ITS SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES AS AN EFFECT OF THE WAR IN UKRAINE

Abstract

The goal of the article on the consequences of the war in Ukraine was to try to answer the question whether we are in danger of a global food crisis and, consequently, a new „Arab Spring”? There are very strong arguments in favor of the food crisis, such as limited availability of grains and artificial fertilizers caused by the armed conflict, a sharp increase in the prices of energy (including fuels), fertilizers, food, including grains – especially wheat, which was previously shipped to the least developed countries in Africa and the Middle East. On the other hand, there is a theoretical possibility of unblocking Ukrainian ports or limiting the scope of the food crisis due to overproduction and fairly stable prices of rice. Summing up, we can very likely anticipate that the global food crisis will soon appear with its negative consequences in the form of more or less radical social changes in the least developed countries of Africa and the Middle East.
