COMPARISON OF ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES OF PLANT EXTRACTS FROM MEDICINAL RAW MATERIALS OBTAINED FROM DISTURBED HABITATS ON THE EXAMPLES OF SPECIES FROM THE ERICACEAE FAMILY

Abstract

This work presents a preliminary direction of research on the possibility of using disturbed habitats, such as embankments and fire zones of railway lines, as substitute habitats for valuable medicinal species of vascular flora and as a potential source of medicinal raw materials with antioxidant properties. Antioxidant properties of the water extracts from leaves of Bearberry Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Cowberry Vaccinium vitis-idaea, and Bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus, were examined by the use of DPPH free radicals, EPR spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Stronger antioxidant properties of water extracts obtained from plant raw materials found in dry areas with increased UV radiation intensity were confirmed. Infusions obtained from the plant materials obtained from disturbed sites neutralized free radicals more strongly than infusions of appropriate control raw materials from normal sites. The strongest antioxidant properties were found in the case of infusion from Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, and the weakest in the case of infusion from Vaccinium myrtillus. It has also been shown that infusion from Arctostaphylos uva-ursi quenches free radicals the fastest, while the slowest interactions with free radicals occur in the case of infusion from Vaccinium vitis-idaea. The obtained spectroscopic results indicate the potential possibilities of using natural raw materials from dry areas with increased exposure to UV radiation to produce medicinal extracts with strong antioxidant properties.
