CHANGES IN THE QUALITY OF INSTITUTIONS AND INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS OF CHOSEN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AFTER ACCESSION TO THE EUROPEAN UNION

Abstract

One of the main objectives of establishing an informal cooperation forum between Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary called the Visegrad Group (V4) was the joint efforts of the countries of the region to achieve integration with Western international organisations. These countries underwent political transformation in the 1990s and joined the European Union in 2004. This moment became a pivotal moment in the path of their economic development. Today, three of them - Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary - are included in the Emerging Markets group, which includes countries characterised by rapid GDP growth and industrialisation, rising per capita income, increasing liquidity in debt and equity markets and a well-established financial system infrastructure. The aim of this article is to show how the quality of institutions and the international competitiveness of these economies have changed over the period 2004 - 2019.
