World War History II in Russian Historical Policy Towards Poland: The Renaissance of the Soviet Interpretation of History

Abstract

The Soviet interpretation of World War II history is the pivot of the synthesis around which political messages are built in order to mobilize Russian society, aimed at building a pride for the accomplishments of the Soviet Union and Russia. The memory
of the war is essentially the only area with consolidating and mobilizing qualities in
the ethnically and religi ously diverse Russian society. The disinformation campaign being waged against Poland as part of the “collective West” has several objectives, including undermining Poland’s position on the world stage, creating through manipulated messages a negative image of Poland as a possible ally of Hitler; attributing to Poles co-responsibility for the Holocaust; and driving a wedge between Poland and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In the context of the struggle against
the “collective West” and the resuscitated matrix of the “besieged fortress,” Poland is a real and tangible embodiment of the enemy. One of the directions within the campaign of historical disinformation has become the promotion of the thesis of alleged Polish “territorial claims” to the eastern lands of the Second Republic and plans for the “partition” of Ukraine.
