The Relevance of the Ethical Principle of Restraint and Work in the Process of Social Education in the Pastoral Activity of Father Bronisław Markiewicz

Przemysław Przybylski

Abstract

Father Bronisław Markiewicz, who lived at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, noticed profound social, economic and political changes that contributed to a crisis of values and the weakening of society. His response was to create an educational system based on the principles of restraint and work. The aim of this concept was to shape individuals capable of rebuilding the nation through religious and patriotic education and personal development. Inspired by the work of St. John Bosco, Father Markiewicz created educational institutions in Galicia that promoted discipline, self-control and a work ethic. His educational system had a normative dimension, based on the values of Latin civilisation and protective pedagogy, aimed at transforming individuals and society. Today, his ideas remain relevant, especially in the face of challenges such as addiction, the weakening of social bonds and the crisis of values. Educational programmes inspired by Markiewicz are implemented in Catholic schools, scouting and social organisations. Contemporary initiatives, such as the social economy and the promotion of the work ethic, refer to his ideas. In the face of global changes, education based on restraint and work remains the key to building responsible and moral societies.
