Relationship of Faith and Culture in the Teaching of John Paul and Benedict XVI

Mariusz Kuciński

Abstract

The relationship between faith, and culture has been one of the most significant and complex themes addressed during the pontificates of John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Both popes dedicated a significant part of their magisterium to exploring how the Christian faith can and should interact with contemporary culture and how theology can serve as a bridge between the divine and human dimensions. Despite differences in their approaches – shaped by personal experiences, historical contexts, and distinct theological sensitivities – both sought to respond to the challenges of the modern world by proposing a holistic vision of the human person, in which faith, reason, and culture harmonize to promote human dignity and the common good. This presentation aims to explore the perspectives of John Paul II and Benedict XVI on the relationship between faith, and culture, structured around key points that highlight both the convergences and differences in their magisterium.
