Educational Challenges Facing the Problem of Fomo and Its Derivatives

Katarzyna Witkowska

Abstract

Digitalization has entered almost every aspect of our lives – from shopping and social interactions to entertainment, work, and education. Thanks to it, many tasks can be carried out faster, more efficiently, and more conveniently. However, behind these conveniences lie real threats. One of them is connected to the constant presence on social media, resulting in the phenomenon known as FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) – the fear that by being disconnected from the digital world, we might miss something interesting, popular, or important. This phenomenon poses a particular threat to young people, who, while maturing, build their identity partly based on the judgments of others – especially negative ones. Adults are not immune to this threat either. So far, the issue of digital threats in the adult world has received significantly less scholarly attention, which is why it’s worth taking a closer look at it. It turns out that introducing digital hygiene, limiting time spent online, and nurturing real-world relationships is important for everyone, regardless of age.
