The Role of Media Discourse in the Process of Legitimizing the 2025 Presidential Elections in Poland: A Content Analysis Study of Selected Nationwide News Portals

Abstract

The media discourse within a few days of the announcement of the presidential election results by the National Electoral Commission changed the narrative direction from legitimizing to delegitimizing. However, during the period of increasing delegitimizing dynamics, there were isolated publications of a legitimizing nature that challenged the opposing narrative. The main social and political actors largely determined the direction of the media discourse regarding electoral irregularities and the importance of the presidential elections, but it was the journalists who had a decisive influence on its final shape. Despite the significant number of publications with a delegitimizing narrative in the studied set, which interfered with the media discourse, the majority of society adopted a legitimizing stance.
