Theatre: Forms and Language in Youth Ministry. From Historical Traditions to Contemporary Practices. Reflections and Proposals

Abstract

Contemporary youth ministry, which includes the religious formation of young people, must now confront the world of electronic media and the entire galaxy of accessible and technologically generated sources of knowledge. Religious formation, most authentically, is based on testimony and the personal experience of intimate, sometimes mysterious, encounters with others and with the divine mystery. We therefore propose theatre in its variety of actions and forms as a favourable environment for testimony, dialogue, and human relationship with the divine. Narration, the fruit of theatrical creativity, includes the interpretation of words, the recreation of the setting, the environment of the event, and the visualization of intimate moments. We propose to briefly examine how the sciences of theatre and performance can assist religious narrative in Christian formation. We wish to recall some illustrious examples from the past who not only interpreted the most important events of the Bible, but also played a significant role in the social life of Christian communities. We want to support the idea that the methodologies of educational theatre, oriented toward ethics and experience, remain interesting and highly valid in Christian education and formation. Some examples of religious theatre, especially those oriented toward education, will serve as confirmation of our proposal to reintroduce theatre activities into today’s youth ministry.
