Jean Monnet and Robert Schuman – secular or Christian roots of the European Union?

Abstract

This article attempts to answer the question whether the roots of the Europaen Union were secular or Christian. I analyze the origins of the European Coal and Steel Community, the first supranational European organization, and the role that Jean Monnet and Robert Schuman played in its creation. The results of the research lead me to the conclusion that depending on who – Monnet or Schuman (candidate for the altars) we accept as the „father” of the EU, we can speak of secular roots in the first case, and Christian roots in the second. However, it was Jean Monnet who was the initiator and originator of the project, while Schuman was „only” executor, but his
name is signed on the plan of the European community from 1950.
