HISTORICAL DETERMINANT AND DOCTRINAL LEGAL REFORMS AS THE REASON FOR CONVENING POLISH DIOCESAN SYNODS DURING THE PONTIFICATE OF ST. JOHN PAUL II

Abstract

According to canon law, the convocation of diocesan synods is decided by the bishop, who takes into account the circumstances and possibilities in his diocese. Such decisions are therefore made in a concrete ecclesial and historical context. The impulse that affects the particular Churches often comes from the universal Church, especially from the Pope, who shapes with his teaching and decisions the main directions followed by dioceses throughout the world. For 27 years of his pontificate, John Paul II inspired in various ways many activities of the Church in Poland, including the synodal movement. The article aims to examine how the historical determinant, i.e. historical events read, interpreted and shaped by John Paul II, as well as doctrinal legal reforms after the Second Vatican Council, influenced the convocation of Polish diocesan synods in the years 1978-2005.
