Thoughts of the political opposition (KOR, ROPCiO) on the threat of Soviet Army’s intervention preceding the events of August 1980

Abstract

The emergence of an organized political opposition in the People’s Republic of Poland after the events that took place in June 1976 in Ursus and Radom influenced the shaping of program concepts regarding changes in the state. The scope of the proposed reforms depended on the limiting factor, which was the threat of the entry into Poland of the troops of the Soviet Union, and thus the threat to state securityand social security. This factor had a significant impact on the political thought of opposition activists and the divisions within it. The emergence of the Movement for the Defense of Human and Civic Rights, the Confederation of Independent Poland and the Young Poland Movement resulted from different program concepts, among which the threat of intervention by the Soviet Union troops played an important differentiating role. The article is based on an analysis of program concepts contained in the second-circulation press, and also uses a comparative analysis, which allows to resolve the research problem concerning the importance of conceptualizing the threat of intervention on the differentiation of the Workers’ Defense Committee and the Movement for the Defense of Human and Civic Rights.
