The article presents current research on the Polish language in Ukraine in the linguistic and sociolinguistic aspect. Commenting on the research, the author poses a number of questions, including questions on the criteria of the Polish nationality, borders of the Polish culture, the role of the Polish state in promoting Polishness in Ukraine. The author also asks questions about the status of the Polish language in Ukraine in the private space (in families) as well as in the public space: in the media, Internet, Catholic Church or in Polish institutions. The Polish language is a foreign language in Ukraine, however, over 30 years of teaching Polish as a foreign language has not brought any results – which is confirmed by both the author’s research in Ukraine and by the observations of refugees in Poland. The author suggests changing educational approach from linguistic (communicative) to cultural one in which the experience of culture and educational aspect are crucial. The aim of this type of education is to prepare the Ukrainian citizens for emigration to Poland (and Europe) or for cooperation with Poland in Ukraine.
