The role of the Polish government-in-exile in the foreign policy aspirations of Miklós Kállay's government in 1943

Abstract

The history of Polish-Hungarian relations during World War II is a well-researched topic among Hungarian and Polish historians, although there are elements of this relationship that are still not sufficiently known, even within these circles. One such issue is the anti-German underground relations, which may be of great interest to other historians focusing on the history of the war. The main question of this article is how the Hungarian government of Miklós Kállay tried to use these relations with Poland to approach the Allies, and what role Polish diplomacy played in this process. My study is primarily based on materials found in the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum in London, as well as documents from the Polish Underground State and the government of the Polish Republic in exile, located in the Archive of New Acts in Warsaw. However, it should be noted that this article is more of a starting point for new research and by no means represents a summary of the topic.
