Dangerous alliances on bloodstained ground: The Hungarian perspective on Ukrainian National Radicalism, 1930–1945

Nándor Pócs

Abstract

In the autumn of 1943, a three-person delegation from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army arrived in Budapest. Their goal was to elevate the earlier agreement with the Hungarian occupation forces to a political level, hoping that the underground Ukrainian state would gain diplomatic recognition from Budapest. This did not happen, and events took a different turn. Nonetheless, this meeting marked the culmination of Hungarian-Ukrainian relations, which had been limited and sporadic during the first half of the 20th century. Therefore, this paper aims to deepen the exploration of this previously overlooked historical antecedent of these relations. The author seeks to present a broader perspective on the ties between the Hungarian state representatives and the Ukrainian national radicalism, primarily represented by the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN). This organization lacked the means to operate fully legally in pre-war Poland or in the Carpathian region annexed by Hungary. The shape of Hungarian-Ukrainian relations was multi-phased. Thus, this article attempts to describe the path toward an agreement that had a chance of realization only after 1941, following the German invasion of the Soviet Union. To provide a broader understanding of these relations, the author draws not only from military and intelligence materials but also from press fragments that reflect the Hungarian public’s attitude towards the Ukrainian independence cause and Ukrainian national radicalism during that period.
