The activity of the Hungarian "Ragged Guard" in relation to the situation in Poland in 1939

Abstract

On July 5, 1939, a unit of the „Ragged Guard” a Hungarian right-wing organization with an anti-German orientation, crossed into the territory of the Second Polish Republic to participate in the Polish-German conflict over Gdańsk. Hungarian allies of the „Polish cause” planned to involve a larger group of volunteers by organizing transport for individuals from the Polish-Hungarian border deeper into Polish territory. Although the operation, led by Kálmán Zsabka, was not carried out and the unit was forcibly repatriated two weeks later, the entire affair caused a scandal on the Hungarian political scene. On August 1, 1939, two members of the pro-German Arrow Cross Party publicly compromised the participants of this action in the Hungarian National Assembly, simultaneously embarrassing the Hungarian government led by Pál Teleki. This article attempts the first reconstruction of the background, history, and course of the incident based on Hungarian literature on the subject, archival sources, and press reports.
