Lublin in the interwar Polish-Jewish press

Monika Szabłowska-Zaremba

Abstract

Lublin is a special place on the map of the Second Polish Republic. The Jewish community lived there for several centuries and played an important role in the development of the city. In this article I present how the story of Lublin was told in the Polish-Jewish press. The best examples are the two magazines: „Izraelita” that proclaimed assimilation at the beginning of the twentieth century and „Myśl Żydowska” – newspaper that appeared in Lublin between 1916-1918. The most important, however, was the interwar press: „Nasz Przegląd”, „Echo Żydowskie”, „Kurier Nowy”, „Nasza Opinia”. I relied on important articles by Meir Balaban, Samuel Leib Schneiderman, Mateusz Mieses, Tadeusz Zaderecki and Lublin correspondents. The articles described the Jewish quarter, important places, for example a Jewish cemetery, Chachmej Lublin Yeshiva and presented such persons as Meir Shapiro, Elijah Klaczkina and painter Henry Lewensztadt.
