PROPERTIES AND APPLICATIONS OF ALGAE - MULTI-ASPECT ANALYSIS

Abstract

Algae are a diverse group of organisms, commonly found in aquatic environments. There are some phylogenetic types, including cyanobacteria, green-algae, brown-algae and red-algae. Algae are a natural source of many nutrients, including proteins, vitamins, fatty acids, micro- and macroelements. Their metabolites are characterized by multidirectional biological activity: anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial and also, according to some studies, anticancer, confirmed by the results of in vitro and in vivo studies. Due to their high nutritional value and health-promoting potential, some algae have been granted functional food status. Algae are also used as food additives and biofuel. They have found use in medicine, for example as an ingredient in dressings. Algae are added to cosmetics for their anti-aging and photoprotective effects. This paper discusses the systematic position of algae, their structure, chemical compounds and characterizes algae as a group of organisms with interesting biological potential and high suitability for use in various industries.
