EXCHANGE RATE POLICY IN ERM II – CONCLUSIONS FOR POLAND FROM THE EXPERIENCE OF CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

Abstract

Exchange rate policy is the use of the exchange rate by monetary authorities to achieve predetermined economic goals. It may be subject to certain restrictions, depending on the exchange rate system chosen by the monetary authorities. The aim of the article is to assess - through the prism of theoretical conditions - the experience in the field of exchange rate policy of Slovenia, Slovakia and the Baltic countries during the period of stay in the ERMII system and its consequences for these economies' fulfillment of the economic convergence criteria required for joining the euro zone, especially the inflation criterion. The analysis also focuses on identifying potential threats related to the stabilization of the exchange rate in ERM II and the resulting restrictions on the autonomy of monetary policy.
