THE FAILED ATTEMPT OF A COMMUNIST COUP IN ESTONIA IN 1924 IN THE LIGHT OF THE REPORT BY THE MILITARY ATTACHÉ OF THE POLISH REPUBLIC IN REVEL (TALLINN)

Abstract

Between 1918 and 1924, Bolshevik Russia and then the Soviet Union aimed to co- nquer and subjugate the countries of Eastern Europe that had been created or regained their independence as a result of the collapse of the three great empires: The German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and Czarist Russia. The Communists took as their formal goal the desire to help the proletarian revolution that was smoldering in the ruins of Kaiser’s Germany, but in fact they dreamed of subjugating all of Euro- pe. Standing in the way of this idea was the revived Polish state and the Baltic states. The war with Poland, which ended in actual defeat for the Bolsheviks, did not force them to abandon their dreams of bringing the bourgeois world to its knees. By 1924, Soviet leaders headed by Vladimir Lenin were planning and attempting to change the geopolitical situation. In Poland, Bulgaria, Romania and Finland, during this time, there were attempts to weaken these countries with forceful solutions. However, co- ups, upheavals and uprisings planned by the Communists on the territories of these countries ended in failure. The last such attempt took place in December 1924 on the territory of the Republic of Estonia. Also ending in failure, it became the subject of analysis by the Polish military attaché in that country. One such document sheds light on the Polish perspective of the events unfolding at the time.
