The article examines contemporary digital media as actors influencing the educational process, functioning both as competitors and allies of the school. The author argues that media increasingly take over functions traditionally assigned to educational institutions by providing immediate access to information and visually engaging content, which significantly shapes how young people learn. Phenomena such as “memory outsourcing,” reduced attention span, digital multitasking, and the weakening of the teacher’s authority pose major challenges to formal education. The article also discusses risks associated with misinformation, digital addiction, and superficial information processing. At the same time, media can support teaching by enabling individualized learning, increasing motivation, and fostering key 21st‑century skills. The author emphasizes the need to develop media literacy, critical thinking, and responsible technology use so that media can effectively complement the educational process.
