Education in Building Societal Resilience to Disinformation and Propaganda
Abstract
Propaganda and disinformation play a significant role in the context of international security in the 21st century. Propaganda is used by entities to shape public opinion, whereas disinformation involves deliberately or inadvertently misleading individuals. Both disinformation and propaganda are directly linked to the media. So-called new media-namely the Internet and social media-play a significant role in the 21st century, as does artificial intelligence. The scale and speed of information dissemination have never before been so deeply intertwined with every sphere of human life. This means that disinformation activities and other forms of information distortion can entail high social costs. One of the most crucial ways to counter disinformation and propaganda is education, delivered through various forms and by diverse entities. This article aims to demonstrate the impact of education on building societal resilience against disinformation and propaganda. The article consists of four parts: an introduction; disinformation and information manipulation in the control of the human mind and emotions; educational forms and entities involved in countering disinformation and propaganda; and a conclusion.
