The proposed project of a hermeneutics of the heart is preliminary and overview in nature. Its aim is not to propose some new version of hermeneutics, but to show what might perhaps be called its core. It can be described, at first, in the most general terms, namely as a transition from an epistemological question – how do we know? – to a phenomenological-hermeneutical or existential question: what attitude should we adopt so that meaning may reveal itself to us? This attitude may be found in what a centuries-old philosophical and religious tradition has referred to as the heart. The hermeneutics of the heart is, therefore, a hermeneutics rooted in affective hermeneutic phenomenology. The heart cannot be reduced to a metaphorical embellishment, but proves to be the place where meaning can truly reveal itself. This truth (the purity or openness of the heart), however, demands interpretive revision and purification.
