The significance of the wedding at Cana in the context of the idiom τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί, γύναι for catechesis and homily

Abstract

In the presented study of a contributory nature, the author has considered the problem of the use of the idiom 'what is between me and you' in the description of the passage about the wedding at Cana of Jn 2:1-12. This idiom finds its connotations, mostly negative, as a definite distinction or even an absolute separation between the participants in the dialogue of the meeting, however, an analysis involving the historical-cultural and the theological-exegetical dimensions. It makes it possible to see specific uses of the idiom in the context of the wedding at Cana and, more specifically, of the dialogue between Jesus and the Mother of God. In addition, the ancient realities studied on the basis of the achievements of modern exegesis allow conclusions to be drawn about the relationship between the Blessed Mother and Jesus Christ in John's narrative of the wedding at Cana from premises with the markings of historical truth. In particular, the use of the historical-critical method in combination with a kerygmatic view of the Gospel event makes it possible, in the perspective of exegesis aimed at the awakening of faith, to formulate practical truths for catechesis and homily, especially the distinction between the reverence which the original community had for Jesus Christ and the different, but also valuable devotion to Mary.
