Gypsies as a social problem in rural areas of the Polish Kingdom of the second half of the nineteenth century in the light of the press for the people

Alicja Gontarek

Abstract

The article discusses the attitude of folk press toward the Gypsy population which was treated as a social problem. The diagnosis of folk magazines has presented concrete ways and methods of resolving this situation, in which peasantry was supposed to be the only causative factor. Gypsy population was treated as an object and seen as a group of immigrants highly unlikely for any adaptation to life in the country and, for this reason, it could not remain in the country. Therefore, the fundamental slogans for resolving the Gypsy issue in the countryside included exclusion of the Gypsies and, then, their elimination by eviction.
