The article deals with the subject of travel souvenirs and objects associated with tourist destinations which contemporary Poles place in their homes. The author interprets such objects as signs, using Ch. S. Peirce’s sign theory. Analysing the textual material obtained from interior design magazines and interior design guides, she distinguishes four functions that objects associated with travel fulfil in domestic space: 1. reviving memories of travels; 2. evoking associations with rest and carefreeness; 3. self-expression and self-identification of the home dwellers; 4. interior aesthetics. The author notes that these functions are consistent with the phenomena characteristic of postmodern culture and testify to the growing interest in cultural diversity in contemporary society.
