Energy Transition of Central Europe – Derusification and the Battle for Economic Competitiveness

Abstract

Energy transition is one of the most important global challenges at political, social and economic levels. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has realised the meaning of energy security in the Central and Eastern European region like never before, while at the same time being a catalyst for the energy transition process – accelerating political and social decisions in this regard. In the region under discussion, the energy transition, in addition to decarbonisation, the development of energy efficiency and electrification of the economy is also closely linked to the derusification of the energy sector and the “battle” for economic competitiveness associated with the formation of new competitive advantages in international markets. This work analyses the energy transition process from the point of view of Central and Eastern Europe in the context of geopolitical and geo-economic conditions.
