Contemporary Dimensions of Strategic Military Competition

Abstract

The purpose of the research was to explain and characterize strategic military competition in the gray zone. In order to solve the research problems, the author relied on his analysis and critical evaluation of the literature on the subject as well as observation and a case study. It was established that strategic military competition should be understood as activities involving military cooperation, struggle below armed conflict, strategic deterrence, and warfare to contest the status quo and achieve strategic dominance. Competition takes the form of a continuum and is transferred to the gray zone. In this zone, conventional, unconventional, irregular, and hybrid military activities can be conducted, which, without crossing the threshold of war, result in significant degradation of the international security environment.
