Inconsistencies and Conflicts of Interest: Tourism Management in Svalbard

Abstract

As recently as the 20th century, coal mining dominated the economy of Svalbard. Currently, there is a rapid increase in tourism activities based on the natural environment, wildlife, and glaciers. This developing sector became a significant part of the economy, and ensuring its sustainability became a priority. Moreover, the global network of the internet creates new possibilities, becoming a communication channel that influences the recipient. The increase in tourism offers and access to information creates a dilemma regarding how the industry should balance provided services with the protection of the archipelago. To achieve this goal, a review of regulations was conducted, and original research was carried out in 2022 (n = 366), which revealed inconsistencies in tourism management in Svalbard. Activities such as coal mining and cruise ship voyages disrupt the balance between economic development and the state of the natural environment.
