The Perils of Travel for Jan Matejko and his Family

Abstract

“Danger is inherent in travel”. Is this aspect of wandering also discernible in the life of the prominent artist Jan Matejko, typically perceived as deeply rooted in the specific environment of Cracow, Lesser Poland, and more broadly, in Polish lands and traditions? The analysis of available sources reveals various factors in his life story, from his earliest childhood, school and student years, through his professional and social activities, to his death and funeral, that highlight the discomforts and dangers of travel, and sometimes even their unpleasant or perilous consequences. The words and descriptions of the artist and his biographers subtly yet distinctly paint an individual portrait of an exceptional life against the backdrop of events unfolding in the latter half of the 19th century.
