Dangers in Travel and Prayers for Jewish Women (mid-19th century) – Texts, Contexts, Cultural Codes, and their Transformations

Abstract

This article aims to present the results of the analysis of travel prayers and the dangers mentioned therein, drawn from prayer books for Jewish women published in the mid-19th century. In the context of Jewish religion and prayers, the most important source is the Hebrew Bible, which carries cultural codes. Its text serves as a framework for analysing multilingual travel prayers and discussing the dangers inherent in them. The awareness of threat and the accompanying negative emotions can be described as universal phenomena, although the motives for travel, preferred destinations, and means of transport changed. On the other hand, the attitude of entrusting travellers to God, verbalised and preserved in the form of travel prayers, constitutes a behavioural model and a phenomenon of a universal nature.
