Progress, Rebellion, or Caricatures of the Recent Past? Postmodernism in Design Aesthetics as a Synonym for Artistic Liberation Based on Selected Manifestos

Abstract

The article, based on a comparative analysis, attempts to explore the narrative of postmodernism’s manifestos, through the lens of libertarian demands declaring the need to diverge from the established practices of the Modern era. Examples discussed in the text include British think tank Archigram and Italian collectives Archizoom Associati and Studio Alchimia, as well as Memphis Milano and the design philosophy of the brand Alessi. Through a critical examination of the writing and direct accounts of postmodern designers, it becomes possible to observe the shifting public sentiment towards the status quo established by Modernism and the need to re-establish a stylistic pluralism that does not reject the historical legacy, creatively deriving from it instead.
