Shaping Social Competence Among Medical Students in the Context of the Importance of Developing Emotional Intelligence in Education: A Literature Review and Author’s Questionnaire Study

Abstract

Emotional intelligence is considered one of the competencies necessary in the professions of socalled social trust. It promotes the effective implementation of therapeutic tasks by specialists, enables the conducting of culturally sensitive diagnostic interviews, allows taking care of the mental well-being of patients, and strengthens their social potential. Many studies have found that emotional intelligence is of great importance for the professional development of medical students. The analysis of the collected quantitative data conducted at one of the Lublin universities among medical students indicates an unsatisfactory level in the respondents regardless of the year of study. Introducing training programs and developing didactic interventions focused on developing social competencies in higher education is necessary to promote patient-centered care in society.
