Centennial Hall / People’s Hall in Wrocław: The Dynamics of the Name Dispute in the Press and on the Internet

Abstract

Designed by Max Berg, the Centennial Hall (Hala Stulecia) in Wrocław is a modernist architectural masterpiece constructed in 1913. A significant cultural landmark, it plays a pivotal role in the cultural life of the Lower Silesian capital. In 1945, the hall’s name was changed from Jahrhunderthalle (Centennial Hall) to Hala Ludowa (People’s Hall). Its subsequent inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2006 under its original name “Centennial Hall” ignited a contentious debate. The post-2007 discourse, which divided political, academic, and media circles, as well as public opinion, was highly emotive. The dispute over the building’s name became intertwined with broader discussions about Wrocław’s post-German past and the city’s relationship with its history and identity.
